Unlike with its other provinces nearby, Cebu is already into the modern age as it is the most developed provinces in the Philippines. It is surrounded by commerce, trade, education and industry---thanks to Cebu City. In fact, the city is known in the whole Visayas because of that and this is the reason why it is one of the most visited places in the country. But aside from that, there are great tourist spots in the Cebu that local and foreign tourists can go to.

One of the places they can go is the Magellan’s Cross located in Cebu City which tells the history of Mactan coming to the Philippines in 1521. He bought this wooden cross that symbolizes the colonization of the Philippines in behalf of King Philipi II in Spain. And since it’s been a lot of centuries since the cross was brought to the country, it has been preserved by encasing it in an outer layer of tindalo wood. The cross is mounted in a concrete pedestal and housed inside a small kiosk and has paintings of the landing of Magellan in Cebu.

Another tourist spot is the Lapu-Lapu Monument located in the Mactan Island. Here, there is a statue of Lapu-Lapu to commemorate the island chieftain’s slaying of Magellan when the Spanish colonizer decided to spread the Catholic faith in the island. Lapu-:Lapu is considered one of the great heroes of the Philippines for stopping the colonization. Here, the grounds are very clean and well-kept and tourists can have a great seafood meal in one of the fish restaurants in the area. Plus, you can check out the shell vendors and buy a unique shell adorned with exquisite designs.

Then, there is the Fort San Pedro, which is known as the smallest and oldest tri-bastion fort in the country. It contains relics and structures that are as old as the Spanish settlement such as canyons, bridges and other landmarks that show what the Spanish days were all about. There are also tour packages that you can get in order to tour the Fort San Pedro so you can know more the history of Cebu.

There are also other tourist spots in Cebu such as the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, Magellan shrine, and the Cebu Taoist Temple that you can visit, but these are not the only things that make Cebu awesome. What makes Cebu famous are their festivals that let tourists flock the province in numbers. In fact, Cebu is dubbed as “‘Island of Festivals’ due to the popularity and number of festivals celebrated throughout the entire province”, according to Wikipedia.

One famous festival that you should really experience at least once in your life is the Sinulog festival. This is a religious festival that is celebrated every third Sunday of January that honors the patron saint Señor Santo Niño de Cebú or the Lord Holy Child of Cebu. It also celebrates the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in the Philippine, thus the reason why a lot of its residents and parades have the face of Magellan as masks. This consists of processions and mardigras parades that make the festival colorful and enjoyable. There are other famous religious festivals that you can attend to make your stay more memorable.

Cebu is indeed one of the places that every tourist should go, whether local or foreign. So if you plan to travel this year, don’t forget to put Cebu on your list.
