One of the most interesting and unusual geological land formations can be found in Bohol, a province found in the Visayas region. This is the place where the Chocolate Hills are discovered. It is an array of hills colored brown during the dry season due to lack of grass, hence the name. There are 1776 hills scattered over just 50 square kilometers.

Aside from this popular tourist attraction, Bohol is also known for Panglao Island, a stunning beach destination and for being the home to the Philippine tarsiers. Tarsiers are endemic to the country and are characterized by its small size and huge eyes. The mildest time of the year in Bohol is from November to April when the northeast monsoon prevails. However, the best time to visit this place is still during the summer season and that is from May to July. The people of Bohol, known as Boholanos, are friendly and hardworking. Aside from tourism, the economy in this province heavily relies on agriculture.

Bohol is the place where the very first international treaty of peace between the Spaniards and the Filipinos took place. It was made between Datu Sikatuna and the Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. The blood compact alliance was known as the Sandugo. Earlier history dictates that the first inhabitants of the land are known as pintados or tattooed ones.

Two of the most attended festivals in Bohol are the Pahinungod Festival and the Sandugo Festival. Pahinungod is celebrated during the month of May. It is a 10-day festivity in commemoration of the municipality of Calape’s devotion to San Vicente Ferrer. San Vicente is the town’s patron saint. The highlight of the event is a One Night Dance Concert, street dancing and a Miss Calape beauty contest. The Sandugo Festival, on the other hand, is celebrated to remind the people about the blood compact done by their ancestors. Expect to see sports events, dance parties, entertainment shows, agro-industrial fairs and cultural showcases.

The most economical way to get to Bohol if you are coming from out of the country is through a flight straight to Cebu. They already have an international airport there. From Cebu, you then have to catch a ferry going to Bohol. Aside from the tourist destinations mentioned earlier, you might also want to check out the caves in the island. Bohol has numerous caves to choose form that is why it is an ideal place for spelunking. The Loboc River Floating Restaurant serves buffet Filipino dishes so you might want to try that as well. The boat will take you around the Loboc River while you enjoy the food and the scenery. In order to entertain you during the short boat ride, there singers are on board to serenade you as you cruise along. If you have money to spend, book your accommodation at Panglao Island Nature Resort. It is not that expensive but its rate is higher compared to those around the area. Do not worry for the fee you will pay is worth it.
